Radiation Oncology
(765) 662-4293
Radiation oncology is a medical specialty dealing
with the use of various forms of radiation in
treating cancer. Treatments prescribed by radiation
oncologists are delivered by a multidisciplinary
radiation therapy team including a radiation physicist,
dosimetrist, radiation therapists and radiation
therapy nurse.
Progressive Cancer Care provides radiation oncology
services with physicians from Indiana Radiotherapy,
P.C. Our center is equipped with a Varian Clinac iX linear accelerator that has IMRT
capabilities. In addition, the center is equipped
with a Siemens CT/Simulator so the patient will
not have to leave the building to have simulations
performed.
What is IMRT?
IMRT allows very precise external beam radiotherapy
treatments. Rather than having a single large
radiation beam pass through the body, with IMRT
the radiation is effectively broken up into thousands
of thin radiation beams,
providing accuracy so
that all beams intersect on the cancer, minimizing
harm to surrounding tissues.
What is Brachytherapy?
Brachytherapy (also called internal radiation)
is a way to administer radiation therapy for treating
cancers. It uses radioactive materials placed
very close to tumors to kill cancer cells while
minimizing damage to normal tissues.
There are two main subtypes of brachytherapy.
Interstitial radiation therapy places radioactive
material into tissue, within or near the cancer.
Intracavitary radiation therapy places the radioactive
material into a body cavity (such as the chest
cavity, abdominal cavity or vagina) near a cancer.
In contrast, external beam radiation therapy or
teletherapy uses radiation delivered to a cancer
from outside of the body.
