Medical Oncology Services for Progressive Cancer Care are provided by Marion General Hospital. Patients are our top priority on the medical oncology/chemotherapy unit. We are proud to be among only 25 percent of the cancer programs in the United States that are accredited by The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. This is a commitment to provide our community and our patients with the highest quality of care that patients need and deserve.

Our cancer program is led by a cancer committee that provides leadership to our oncology program. This has a positive impact both on patient outcomes as well as on cancer prevention, education and cancer research for our community. Our professional staff, which includes board-certified physicians, certified oncology nurses and a registered pharmacist, are all dedicated to patients.

In Medical Oncology, we use chemotherapy drugs to treat cancer. This is done by destroying cancer cells, which grow rapidly in an unorganized and uncontrolled manner. Presently, chemotherapy treatment consists of one or more drugs received at varied intervals by mouth, injection into the muscle or a vein.

The desired goal is to eliminate the disease. More commonly we expect to prevent recurrence or to provide remission for an extended period of time. Our overall goal is for patients to have the best quality of life possible within the limits of their illness.

In our infusion center, we administer many intravenous fluids, such as antibiotics, chemotherapy, biotherapy, blood products and hydration therapy to patients on an outpatient basis, making treatment more convenient and cost-effective.

In an effort to offer the best care possible, we have monthly multidisciplinary tumor board conferences with physicians participating from surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology and primary care physicians. Other participating areas include enterostomal nursing and cancer registry staff.
